N&O Publisher Not Arrested On Child Porn Charge!

...... August 21; ’12:  News & Observer Publisher Orage Quarles was not arrested Tuesday on charges of trafficking in child pornography and white slavery.  As to whether Quarles or N&O Editor John Drescher routinely expose themselves to pedestrians in Nash Square, FBI officials have not returned our calls.....

Does that headline “grab you”?  Not a single word of the above is untrue nor would Quarles nor Drescher deny one bit of it.

Welcome to the dumpster diving world of McClatchy Corporation.  McClatchy owns North Carolina’s two largest daily newspapers – Raleigh’s News & Observer and the Charlotte Observer.

Tuesday morning readers of both papers were greeted with the headline:

“Renee Ellmers (R-NC) Went To Israel But Did Not Go Skinny Dipping”

The opening line of the story was:

U.S. Rep. Renee Ellmers joined a group of lawmakers for a trip to Israel that the FBI looked into after reports that one congressman swam nude in the Sea of Galilee. Her staff said she did not join others swimming.

A picture of the attractive Republican legislator ran beside the headline.

The story beyond the lurid headline involved a Congressional fact-finding trip that Congresswoman Ellmers went on a year ago.   Apparently at some point during the trip a Congressman from Kansas did indeed jump nude into the Sea Of Galilee; but Congresswoman Ellmers did not nor was there the slightest reason to suspect she did....

EXCEPT
to slander Rep Ellmers' name and reputation.  A common practice for the overtly liberal media outlets.

The McClatchy papers have taken other cheapshots at Rep. Ellmers but this was a new low for even them.   This sort of cheap sophomoric headline gotcha is normally found in supermarket tabloids and high school newspapers..... and in McClatchy newspapers.

The McClatchy Corp. enterprises are failing all across the country with massive staff layoffs a matter of course for the past several years.  As a result the overall professionalism of the individual papers has gone to hell in a tattered handbasket.

Couple the financial woes of the newspapers with their ultra-liberal bias and their latest stunt should not surprise anyone.  Disgust anyone?  Certainly; but not at all surprising.

Expect this level of tabloid trash from The N&O and Charlotte Observer to ratchet up as November elections approach.  It is who they are.  It is what they do.

Similar Vein Headlines You likely won’t see in a McClatchy paper......  we have every reason to believe the following headlines are 100% true.

VP Joe Biden May Be Crazy; But Has Not Been Declared Insane

Senator Kay Hagan’s Staff Reports:  We Think She Could Pass a Drug Test

Michelle Obama’s Butt Is Not As Big As Grover Cleveland’s

McClatchy Newspapers Are Not Filing For Bankruptcy.... Yet

N&O’s Rob Christensen & Barry Saunders Deny They Are Gay Lovers

Yes, it will get much worse as November gets closer.

John, you've seen my posts in your comments terdahs, as well as others'. I usually chose not to comment due to a lack of time to think out my writing, or a subject that is doesn't sufficiently annoy or otherwise engage my muse . I don't know how you (and others)do this on a regular basis - my own rather short comments take what seems to be too long to compose and review. My hat is off to you and your blogging colleagues. On the matter of the N&O responses to your queries, I am struck by two different issues: It's not the crime, it's the cover-up I've made reference to this in other posts, but again we have an organization that seems to think that they can make a problem go away by BS-ing their way past those who would ask questions. Mr. Quarles clearly doesn't understand that his response will merely create additional questions and embarrassment. Perhaps as a(n) (old) member of the Old Media , he should find out what happens in the New Media before he tries to blow you off. Now, they're just asking for trouble . I'm not a lawyer (thankfully), but a question comes to mind does the Freedom of the Press (and the N&O's ability to shield its sources) guaranteed by the Constitution extend all the way to false statements made in the press? Perhaps the N&O could find themselves on the wrong end of a subpoena requiring them to identify the source of what were obviously incorrect statements made to the reporter and committed to print in the paper. They'll probably take the NYTimes' strategy (as in the Valerie Plame case) and back-up their reporter right up until the reporter goes to jail, and then find they were hoodwinked. Fighting for rights that were squandered is an expensive proposition, made only worse when you feel you have to throw your reporter under the bus later.Maybe you should give Mr. Quarles one more opportunity to fess up, then you can let him have it with both (rhetorical) barrels. Maybe he'll figure it out in the meantime, but, probably not.

Republicans are in a no win situation now that our society is in the toilet like it is. Democrats don't seems to give a hoot what their politicians do, so they get a pass.

It seems that for McClatchy employees, what they put out is no longer seen by them as a "newspaper" but rather a "product." When the connection between what they do, and what they produce is lost, so then are the last vestiges of newspaper professionalism or journalist ethics. At which point the N&O is no longer a "beacon of truth" but just their own personal opinion sandbox to play in.

________

AP: Today was a landmark moment in their total deterioration to trash tabloid.
